Population Reinforcement of the Endangered Freshwater Pearl Mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera): Lessons Learned

Freshwater mussel populations are in sharp decline and are considered to be one of the most imperilled groups globally. Consequently, the number of captive breeding programmes has increased rapidly in recent years, coupled with subsequent reintroductions/population reinforcements to reverse these declines. The outcomes of mussel conservation translocations are seldom reported in the primary literature, hindering opportunities for learning and for population recovery at pace. Here, we describe the methods employed to carry out a successful conservation translocation of the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera) in a declining population in northwest England. Following a small-scale pilot release in 2017, four release sites were identified for a population reinforcement of over 1300 tagged mussels in 2021. Monitoring during 2022 showed high levels of retention of juveniles at three out of the four release sites, despite the occurrence of a significant flood event during October 2021. Subsequent releases of 1100 juveniles were carried out across the three successful sites in 2023. Ongoing and regular monitoring is essential in order to provide data on the longer-term fate of propagated juveniles in the wild. This will allow for adaptive management of release activities in this river. These data will be useful to design conservation translocation strategies for other imperilled pearl mussel populations in the UK and throughout Europe.

Host size matters for reproduction: Evolution of spawning preference and female reproductive phenotypes in mussel-symbiotic freshwater bitterling fishes.

Bitterling fishes evolve an idiosyncratic symbiosis with freshwater mussels, in which they are obligated to spawn in the gills of mussels for reproduction. In recent years, freshwater mussel populations have been drastically diminishing, due to accelerating anthropogenic impacts, which can be large threats to the risk of bitterling's extinction cascade (i.e. 'coextinction'). The host mussel size may be an important factor driving the adaptation and evolution of bitterling's reproductive phenotypes. Here we examined the host size preference and morphological adaptation of female bitterling to the host size from 17 localities at the Han River in Korea. Using our developed molecular-based species identification for bitterling's eggs/larvae inside the mussels, we further determined the spawning patterns of seven bitterling species. Mean length of spawned mussels (N = 453) was significantly larger than that of unspawned mussels (N = 1814), suggesting that bitterling prefers to use larger hosts as a spawning ground. Spawning probability was clearly greater as mussel size increases. Results of our reciprocal transplant experiments do provide some evidence supporting the 'bitterling's larger host preference' hypothesis. Interspecific competition appeared to be intense as two fish species often spawned eggs in the same mussel individuals simultaneously. Longer ovipositor and more elongated egg may evolve in females of Tanakia signifer in response to larger host environments. The observed bitterling's spawning preference for large-sized mussels may evolve perhaps because of the fitness advantage in relation to the offspring survival. Our findings further inform on the development of effective conservation and management strategy for the endangered bitterling fishes.

Fish and Bivalve Therapeutants in Freshwater Mussel Captive Breeding—A First Summary of Practical Experiences in European Facilities

A significant part of freshwater mussel populations has strongly declined and many species are severely threatened nowadays. Captive breeding programs often form a central part of conservation strategies. As the life cycles of many mussel species include an obligate parasitic phase, host fish health is a crucial component of successful mussel breeding efforts. However, information about the safe application of fish therapeutants in mussel captive breeding is scarce. This article summarizes information about practical experiences in Europe. In total, eight different therapeutants were used to treat infestations of eight pathogens. Treatment success varied depending on pathogen and prevalence when treatments were initiated. Mussels did not seem to be affected by treatments, especially as long as they remained encysted. In a second step, Virkon S was applied to treat a fungal infection in tanks with brown trout (Salmo trutta) carrying encysted freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera) glochidia and to disinfect juvenile mussel rearing containers. In both cases, mussels were not harmed and treated fish fully recovered. Results indicate that certain therapeutants can be used safely and successfully at different stages of breeding cycles. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of standard protocols, which would improve efficiency and the safety of treatments.

Habitat aging and degradation in terrestrialized floodplains: a need to rejuvenate processes for sustaining freshwater mussel populations

Progressive floodplain terrestrialization leads to the deterioration of floodplain ecosystems. Although the importance of hydrological connectivity between floodplain habitats and river channels for floodplain‐dependent organisms has been emphasized, less attention has been paid to the temporal relationship between habitat degradation and aquatic organisms. In this study, we examined temporal changes in mussel population structures and the hydrological connectivity of pond‐like floodplain water bodies (FWBs) in the terrestrialized floodplains of a lowland river in Japan. We tested the hypothesis that FWB habitats for mussels degrade over time, while newly formed FWBs contribute to providing recruitment sites for mussels. The habitat age for 53 FWBs was determined as of 2018, using historical aerial photographs. Inundation frequency, mussel abundance, and size structures (shell length) were also investigated in the FWBs in 2007 and 2018. Mussel abundance decreased with FWB aging (6–36 years), which coincided with a decrease in inundation frequency. In most existing FWBs, mussel abundance in all size classes decreased over the decade (2007–2018). In contrast, small individuals occurred in the newly formed FWBs at age 6, and in the existing FWBs where inundation frequency slightly increased over the decade (2007–2018), such FWBs were rare. In conclusion, the “young” and “rejuvenated” FWBs were found to be critically important for the recruitment and persistence of mussel populations. This suggests that the floodplain management strategy of “cyclic floodplain rejuvenation” could be applicable for mussel conservation in terrestrialized floodplains of lowland rivers.

Histopathologic survey of free-living populations of 2 species of freshwater mussels in Indiana.

Freshwater mussels are one of the most endangered groups of animals in Indiana, with nearly half of the native species either extirpated or listed as "state endangered" or of "special concern." Nationally, numerous freshwater mussel species are considered threatened. Freshwater mussel diseases are not well understood and few published accounts of freshwater mussel diseases with detailed histological descriptions exist. Mass mortality events within mussel populations are increasingly recognized, often with undetermined etiology. Our objective was to determine baseline histopathology in free-living populations of freshwater mussels. One-hundred twenty individual mussels representing 2 species-plain pocketbook (Lampsilis cardium) and fatmucket (Lampsilis siliquoidea)-were collected from 3 different locations within the Wildcat Creek watershed in central Indiana during June and July 2019. A cross-section through the visceral mass was obtained and immersed in 10% neutral-buffered formalin, with routine processing and hematoxylin and eosin staining. Branchial acariasis occurred in 43/60 fatmuckets and 22/60 plain pocketbooks. Infection with a bucephalid trematode was recognized in 18/60 fatmuckets, while infection of the gonadal duct with an unidentified trematode species was identified in 4/60 fatmuckets and 18/59 plain pocketbooks. Additional changes associated with unidentified trematodes, bacteria, fungi or oomycetes, and ciliates were observed. Other miscellaneous changes included mineralization, neuronal lipofuscinosis, and gonadal atrophy/atresia. A range of histological changes were observed. These changes likely represented background lesions: incidental findings, spontaneous infectious or endosymbiotic conditions, or normal physiological changes that routinely occur in free-living wild populations. Awareness of baseline lesions should inform future diagnostic investigations of mussel mortality events.

Molecular identity crisis: environmental DNA metabarcoding meets traditional taxonomy-assessing biodiversity and freshwater mussel populations (Unionidae) in Alabama.

The use of environmental DNA (eDNA) to assess aquatic biodiversity is a growing field with great potential for monitoring and managing threatened species, like freshwater mussel (Unionidae) populations. Freshwater mussels are globally imperiled and serve essential roles in aquatic systems as a food source and as a natural water filter making their management essential for ecosystem health. Unfortunately, mussel populations are often understudied, and challenges exist to accurately and efficiently describe the full suite of species present. Multispecies eDNA approaches may also be more challenging where freshwater mussel populations are most diverse due to ongoing and significant taxonomic restructuring that has been further complicated by molecular phylogenies using mitochondrial genes. For this study, we developed a microfluidic metabarcoding array that targets a wide range of species, from invertebrates to fishes, with an emphasis on detecting unionid mussels known to be present in the Sipsey River, Alabama. We compared mussel species diversity across six sites with well-studied mussel assemblages using eDNA surveys and traditional quadrat surveys in 2016. We examined how factors such as mussel population density, biomass and location in the river substrate impacted our ability to detect certain species; and investigated unexpected eDNA detections through phylogenetic analysis. Our eDNA results for fish and mussel species were broadly consistent with the data from traditional electrofishing and quadrat-based field surveys, although both community eDNA and conventional sampling detected species unique to that method. Our phylogenetic analysis agreed with other studies that treat Pleurobema decisum and P. chattanoogaense as synonymous species; however, they are still listed as unique species in molecular databases which complicates their identity in a metabarcoding assay. We also found that Fusconaia flava and F. cerina are indistinguishable from one another using a portion of the NADH dehydrogenase Subunit 1 (ND1) marker, which may warrant further investigation into whether or not they are synonymous. Our results show that many factors impacted our ability to detect and correctly identify Unionidae mussel species. Here we describe the obstacles we faced, including the murky phylogeny of Unionidae mussels and turbid river conditions, and our development of a potentially impactful freshwater mussel monitoring eDNA assay.

Effect of complex hydraulic variables and physicochemical factors on freshwater mussel density in the largest floodplain lake, China

BackgroundHabitat degradation and flow regime alterations are two of the most prominent and common impact factors to freshwater mussel populations. Knowledge of the correlation between freshwater mussel distribution, density and habitat characteristics is important for maintaining and restoring their biodiversity and ecological functions. Information on predicting habitat suitability of freshwater mussels is lacking in China. Here, we aimed to analyze the correlation between freshwater mussel density and complex hydraulic and physicochemical variables to predict habitat suitability.ResultsThe results showed that four complex hydraulic variables (boundary Reynolds number, critical shear stress, bed roughness and mean sediment particle size) and four physicochemical variables (water temperature, chlorophyll-a, transparency and pH) were key factors for predicting habitat suitability of freshwater mussels. Freshwater mussel density was significantly correlated with Froude number, water temperature and chlorophyll-a.ConclusionsOur results confirmed that higher freshwater mussel density would be associated with areas that are stable in complex hydraulic and physicochemical variables. These results provide an important insight into the conservation of freshwater mussel diversity and their habitat restoration in China and globally.

An assessment of the relation between metal contaminated sediment and freshwater mussel populations in the Big River, Missouri

The Big River in southeast Missouri drains the largest historical lead mining area in the United States. Ongoing releases of metal contaminated sediments into this river are well documented and are suspected of suppressing freshwater mussel populations. We characterized the spatial extent of metal contaminated sediments and evaluated its relationship with mussel populations in the Big River. Mussels and sediments were collected at 34 sites with potential metal effects and 3 reference sites. Analysis of sediment samples showed that lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) concentrations were 1.5 to 65 times greater than background concentrations in the reach extending 168 km downstream from Pb mining releases. Mussel abundance decreased acutely downstream from these releases where sediment Pb concentrations were highest and increased gradually as Pb sediment concentrations attenuated downstream. We compared current species richness with historical survey data from three reference rivers with similar physical habitat characteristics and human effects, but without Pb-contaminated sediment. Big River species richness was on average about one-half that expected based on reference stream populations and was 70–75 % lower in reaches with high median Pb concentrations. Sediment Zn and cadmium, and particularly Pb, had significant negative correlations with species richness and abundance. The association of sediment Pb concentrations with mussel community metrics in otherwise high-quality habitat indicates that Pb toxicity is likely responsible for depressed mussel populations observed within the Big River. We used concentration-response regressions of mussel density verses sediment Pb to determine that the Big River mussel community is adversely affected when sediment Pb concentrations are above 166 ppm, the concentration associated with 50 % decreases in mussel density. Based on this assessment of metals concentrations sediment and mussel fauna, our findings indicate that sediment in approximately 140 km of the Big River with suitable habitat has a toxic effect to mussels.

Revisiting 1964 and a unique river mussel study

In 1964 an oft-cited study was carried out on the freshwater mussel populations in the River Thames near Reading in Berkshire. Over half a century later, zoologist Isobel Ollard revisited to the site to gauge what had happened in the intervening period.

Collapse of native freshwater mussel populations: Prospects of a long-term study

Freshwater biodiversity is under threat, but long-term quantitative studies showing major demographic declines in invertebrate species are still scarce. Here we focus on a long-term study (2004 to 2019) using four native freshwater mussel species (Order Unionida) colonizing two canals of the Ebro River (Spain). Special attention was given to Pseudunio auricularius (Spengler, 1793), a critically endangered species. Generalized linear mixed models results showed significant temporal effects on mussel densities, with a continuous decline in all species present, being Anodonta anatina, Potomida littoralis and Unio mancus now considered locally extinct. Pseudunio auricularius is still present in the studied canals, but at very low densities (0.01 ind/m2). Capture-recapture data on P. auricularius show a progressive decline in its survival probability, down to 0.15 in 2020 in the Canal Imperial de Aragón, although in the Canal de Tauste it remains close to 1. Based on these results, we discuss several hypotheses that may explain this rapid collapse of unionid populations. Given the precarious conservation status of freshwater mussels in both canals, effective management measures should be urgently applied, including habitat restoration and captive breeding.

Freshwater mussel populations in Pacific Coast Watersheds (Oregon, USA): occurrence, condition, habitat, and fish species overlap

In the western US, freshwater mussels (Order Unionida) contribute valuable ecosystem functions to riverine systems, yet have declined across their range following widespread degradation of freshwater habitat and parallel declines in salmonids, host fish for larval western pearlshell mussels (Margaritifera falcata). The status of M. falcata populations is of particular conservation interest in isolated coastal watersheds given unique freshwater mussel-host fish relationships. To understand M. falcata population ecology in Oregon’s coastal watersheds, we analyzed stream survey data on presence/absence of mussels collected over a recent eleven-year period, explored co-varying habitat characteristics, and summarized mussel distribution and host fish co-occurrence. We also collected M. falcata and compared condition indices among eight locations. Naïve occupancy in surveyed areas was 12.3%, about half of predicted occupancy (ψ = 0.24, CI 0.19–0.31) based on modeling repeated visits over a ten year assumed closed period. Mussel occupancy was correlated with reach-scale habitat variables, and the probability of mussel observations was positively correlated with presence of coho (Oncorhynchus kisutch) salmon. Condition varied significantly among locations. Spatial relationships between existing mussel distribution, host species, and habitat variables answer questions about coastal freshwater mussel populations, as well as serve to identify priorities for further research and population assessment.

Mussel mass mortality in the Clinch River, USA: metabolomics detects affected pathways and biomarkers of stress.

Biologists monitoring freshwater mussel (order Unionida) populations rely on behavioral, often subjective, signs to identify moribund ("sick") or stressed mussels, such as gaping valves and slow response to probing, and they lack clinical indicators to support a diagnosis. As part of a multi-year study to investigate causes of reoccurring mortality of pheasantshell (Ortmanniana pectorosa; synonym Actinonaias pectorosa) in the Clinch River, Virginia and Tennessee, USA, we analyzed the hemolymph metabolome of a subset of mussels from the 2018 sampling period. Mussels at the mortality sites were diagnosed in the field as affected (case) or unaffected (control) based on behavioral and physical signs. Hemolymph was collected in the field by non-lethal methods from the anterior adductor muscle for analysis. We used ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectroscopy to detect targeted and untargeted metabolites in hemolymph and compared metabolomic profiles by field assessment of clinical status. Targeted biomarker analysis found 13 metabolites associated with field assessments of clinical status. Of these, increased gamma-linolenic acid and N-methyl-l-alanine were most indicative of case mussels, while adenine and inosine were the best indicators of control mussels. Five pathways in the targeted analysis differed by clinical status; two of these, purine metabolism and glycerophospholipid metabolism, were also indicated in the untargeted analysis. In the untargeted nalysis, 22 metabolic pathways were associated with clinical status. Many of the impacted pathways in the case group were catabolic processes, such as degradation of amino acids and fatty acids. Hierarchical clustering analysis matched clinical status in 72% (18 of 25) of mussels, with control mussels more frequently (5 of 16) not matching clinical status. Our study demonstrated that metabolomic analysis of hemolymph is suitable for assessing mussel condition and complements field-based indicators of health.

Targeted metabolomics characterizes metabolite occurrence and variability in stable freshwater mussel populations.

Freshwater mussels (order Unionida) play a key role in freshwater systems as ecosystem engineers and indicators of aquatic ecosystem health. The fauna is globally imperilled due to a diversity of suspected factors; however, causes for many population declines and mortality events remain unconfirmed due partly to limited health assessment tools. Mussel-monitoring activities often rely on population-level measurements, such as abundance and age structure, which reflect delayed responses to environmental conditions. Measures of organismal health would enable preemptive detection of declining condition before population-level effects manifest. Metabolomic analysis can identify shifts in biochemical pathways in response to stressors and changing environmental conditions; however, interpretation of the results requires information on inherent variability of metabolite concentrations in mussel populations. We targeted metabolites in the haemolymph of two common mussels, Lampsilis cardium and Lampsilis siliquoidea, from three Indiana streams (USA) using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography combined with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. The influence of species, stream and sex on metabolite variability was examined with distance-based redundancy analysis. Metabolite variability was most influenced by species, followed by site and sex. Inter- and intraspecies metabolite variability among sexes was less distinct than differences among locations. We further categorized metabolites by occurrence and variability in mussel populations. Metabolites with high occurrence (Categories 1 and 2) included those indicative of energy status (catabolism versus anabolism; arginine, proline, carnitine, nicotinic acid, pantothenic acid), oxidative stress (proline, glutamine, glutamate) and protein metabolism (thymidine, cytidine, inosine). Metabolites with lower occurrence (Category 3) are constituents of assorted metabolic pathways and can be important biomarkers with additional temporal sampling to characterize their variability. These data provide a reference for future temporal (before/after) monitoring and for studies of stressor-metabolite linkages in freshwater mussels.

Freshwater mussels and host fish gut microbe community composition shifts after agricultural contaminant exposure.

We examined the effects of a mixture of contaminants found in agricultural watersheds on the gut microbiota and physiology of both the freshwater mussel Lampsilis cardium, and L. cardium host fish Micropterus salmoides. Lampsilis cardium and M. salmoides were exposed to three concentrations of agricultural contaminants for 60 days (observing behaviour daily) before being sampled for gut microbiota analyses. DNA was extracted from the gut samples, amplified via PCR, and sequenced using the Illumina Mi-Seq platform. Only L. cardium guts had differing microbiota across treatments, with an increase in potentially pathogenic Aeromonas. We also provide novel evidence of a core microbiota within L. cardium and M. salmoides. In terms of physiology, female L. cardium exhibited a decrease in movement and marsupial gill display in contaminant exposures. Exposure to contaminants from agricultural watersheds may affect population recruitment within freshwater mussel communities over time. Specifically, increased pathogenic micro-organisms and altered behaviour can reduce the likelihood of glochidia dispersal. This study supports emerging research that contaminants found in agricultural watersheds may be a factor in freshwater mussel population declines. It also provides novel evidence that unionids have a core gut microbiota.

Declines in freshwater mussel density, size and productivity in the River Thames over the past half century.

A pioneering, quantitative study published in Journal of Animal Ecology in 1966 on freshwater mussel populations in the River Thames, UK, continues to be cited extensively as evidence of the major contribution that mussels make to benthic biomass and ecosystem functioning in global river ecosystems. Ecological alteration, as well as declines in freshwater mussel populations elsewhere, suggest that changes to mussel populations in the River Thames are likely to have occurred over the half century since this study. We resurveyed the site reported in Negus (1966) and quantified the changes in mussel population density, species composition, growth patterns and productivity. We found large declines in population density for all unionid species. The duck mussel Anodonta anatina decreased to 1.1% of 1964 density. The painter's mussel Unio pictorum fell to 3.2% of 1964 density. The swollen river mussel Unio tumidus showed statistically nonsignificant declines. In contrast to 1964, in 2020 we found no living specimens of the depressed river mussel Pseudanodonta complanata (classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List) but found new records of the invasive, nonnative zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha and Asian clam Corbicula fluminea. Additionally, we found strong decreases in size-at-age for all species, which now grow to 65-90% of maximum lengths in 1964. As a result of reduced density and size, estimated annual biomass production fell to 7.5% of 1964 levels. Since mussels can be important to ecosystem functioning, providing key regulating and provisioning services, the declines we found imply substantial degradation of freshwater ecosystem services in the River Thames, one of the UK's largest rivers. Our study also highlights the importance to conservationists and ecologists of updating and validating assumptions and data about wild populations, which in the present era of anthropogenic ecosystem alteration are undergoing significant and rapid changes. Regular population surveys of key species are essential to maintain an accurate picture of ecosystem health and to guide management.

Status of Three Large Populations of Western Pearlshell (Bivalvia: Margaritiferidae: Margaritifera falcata) in the Willamette River Basin, Oregon

Freshwater mussels in the western US are under-studied compared to their eastern cousins, and no western species receive federal protection. Mussel distribution throughout Oregon's rivers and streams is poorly documented, and there are limited historical records to inform assessments of whether, and by how much, current populations may have declined. We launched a long-term project to characterize freshwater mussel populations throughout the Willamette River basin. Surveys were conducted in the mainstem Willamette River and a major tributary, the Middle Fork Willamette, during three years. A two-stage sampling process was used; transects were surveyed qualitatively, and then 0.25 m2 quadrats were placed randomly in transects for quantitative surveys. Mussels visible at the substrate surface were counted using viewing scopes and snorkeling, and scuba diving in deeper water. To facilitate detection of juveniles (≤ 3.50 cm long) and calculation of the burial factor, some quadrats were double sampled; mussels visible at the surface were counted, then the substrate was excavated to a depth of 10 to 20 cm, and all mussels (surface and buried) were counted and their shell length measured. Dense western pearlshell (Margaritifera falcata) populations were found at all locations, but they differed greatly in length class structure, density, and presence of juveniles. Some sites also contained small numbers of floaters (Anodonta spp.), and notably, a single western ridgemussel (Gonidea angulata) was found in a highly urbanized reach. These surveys provide baseline data on the current status of several freshwater mussel populations in the Willamette River basin.

Hydrology and invasive macrophytes may mediate freshwater mussel density and population size structure in a hydropeaking reservoir

Globally-threatened freshwater mussels belonging to the order Unionida (Bivalvia) may be adversely affected by dense beds of submerged macrophytes that modify habitat at the sediment-water interface. Such effects can be particularly pronounced in modified lentic ecosystems such as reservoirs which are subject to hydrological regimes (e.g., hydropeaking) that can exacerbate macrophyte-mediated impacts, including anoxic or hypoxic conditions, the related release of toxic ions (e.g., ammonia), and silt accumulation that inhibits filter-feeding. Accordingly, we compared how population size-structure and biomass of the New Zealand mussel Echyridella menziesii varied inside and outside of dense beds of invasive macrophytes known to have similar impacts on water chemistry (e.g., anoxia) in two northern New Zealand hydroreservoir locations with contrasting hydrology (lacustrine location dominated by Ceratophyllum demersum; and riverine location dominated by Egeria densa). We found adverse sediment-water interface conditions were not always associated with dense submerged macrophyte beds in littoral zones. Nonetheless, where they occurred, adverse sediment-water interface conditions were related to reduced mussel density and adult skewed size-structure, inferring reduced recruitment. Disentangling direct and indirect effects with structural equation modelling indicated that increased pore-water ammonia did not impact these primarily adult populations of freshwater mussels. Increased sediment organic matter, silt, and previously recorded hypoxia and anoxia were exacerbated in the lacustrine section where variable flows promoting water mixing were not present. High densities of mussels <40 mm in length were associated with favourable sediment-water interface conditions of low silt and sediment organic matter, suggesting that enhanced water exchange in and around macrophyte beds may increase juvenile mussel survival in littoral zones of the riverine lake section. Our findings highlight a potential role for hydropeaking management in mitigating the development of adverse physicochemical conditions, and underscore the context-specific effects that dense non-native macrophyte beds can have on mussel populations.

The Wullowitz-Lakes theory: Periglacial impacts on river morphology and habitat suitability for the endangered freshwater pearl mussel

The Malše River, on the border between Austria and the Czech Republic, contains one of the last remaining freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera) populations on the Bohemian Massif. Evidence from field studies indicated that landscape evolutionary processes changed the boundary conditions for river channel formations, especially in those parts where the remaining mussels, probably also self-reproducing to a limited extent, were documented. The aim of the present work was to study these possible palaeo-impacts through (i) the analysis of the terrain data and accompanying hydrodynamic-numerical modelling and (ii) sediment sampling of the main channel and the surrounding floodplains at the reach and catchment scales. The results indicated that solifluction caused a historic blockage in the drainage area with consequent formation of lakes in the upstream part of these obstructions. At least two sites where this “Wullowitz-Lakes Theory” can be applied were identified. The occurrence of these lakes was validated by sediment analysis. The findings further indicated that the later fluvial processes in these deposits of a former stagnant water body forced the formation of an anabranching channel in the system, which would not have occurred in a solely freely developed fluvial system. In conclusion, it could be determined that the consideration of palaeo-processes might be important even for present onsite assessments of aquatic habitats and species such as the endangered freshwater pearl mussel.

A riverine biodiversity hotspot in northern Myanmar supports three new and narrowly endemic freshwater mussel species

Abstract The Western Indochina Subregion (Myanmar) represents a freshwater biodiversity hotspot of worldwide significance and houses a plethora of endemic freshwater species, among which are amphibians, fish, and various aquatic invertebrates. The freshwater mussel (Bivalvia: Unionidae) fauna of western Indochina is characterized by high taxonomic richness, with almost all species and several genera being endemic to the subregion. Furthermore, there are a number of species endemic to a single basin or even to a single tributary of a larger river system (the so‐called intra‐basin endemic taxa). Here, the discovery of three new, narrowly endemic freshwater mussel species from northern Myanmar is presented: Radiatula kachinensis sp. nov., Trapezidens mogaungensis sp. nov. (upper Ayeyarwady basin), and Lamellidens chindwinensis sp. nov. (upper Chindwin basin). All the new species are upland river specialists, which are under high human pressure as a result of habitat degradation, deforestation, oil palm expansion, river damming, and biological invasions. A nearly complete lack of data on the life cycles and fish hosts should be considered the most striking gap in recent knowledge of tropical Asian freshwater mussels. Here, available data on 27 species belonging to the genera Radiatula, Trapezidens, and Lamellidens are revised. It is shown that certain fish hosts are known for two species only. Further spread of the alien Chinese pond mussels (Sinanodonta woodiana species complex) in Indochina may be considered one of the significant threats to native freshwater mussel populations. Here, it is shown that the temperate invasive lineage of S. woodiana is established in at least three non‐native populations in the Ayeyarwady and Salween basins. Moreover, the first arrival of the tropical invasive lineage of S. woodiana to Myanmar is announced, although it has been predicted previously. This lineage was found at two sites on the Shan Plateau (Ayeyarwady basin) close to the Chinese border.

Assessment of endangered freshwater pearl mussel populations in the Northern Iberian Plateau in relation to non–native species: xenodiversity as a threat

In the last two decades, small populations of freshwater pearl mussels, Margaritifera margaritifera, have been recorded in Mediterranean rivers of the Iberian Northern Plateau. A survey was carried out in Castilla and León in 2018 to assess the development of populations of this species in all the rivers of known distribution and to update the threat classification. Thirty sections in the rivers Negro, Tera, Alberche and Águeda were positive for its presence, and another 50 stretches of seven rivers were negative. The species is currently distributed over about 22.5 km. Águeda and Tera populations have decreased dramatically in the last 14 years and are on the threshold of extinction. The Negro river supports the largest population, although the species has now disappeared in at least 61 % of the stretches that were inhabited in 2004. All populations showed very low densities and an ageing population structure, with no recruitment for decades. The presence of non-native invasive alien species (NIS) was higher than in a previous regional survey, with the signal crayfish representing the greatest threat. We observed changes in benthic microhabitats and direct predation of adults and glochidia conglutinates. In the Alberche River, in strict syntopy with M. margaritifera and two other mussel species, 10 NIS were detected. The current hydrological and ecological conditions in the Duero watershed support the settlement of exotic species to the disadvantage of native mollusks, which are more demanding in terms of microhabitats.
